Weekend Guide to Asbury Park
Planning a weekend in Asbury Park? Expect great food, live music, ocean views, and creative energy that keeps the weekend interesting. Here’s how to spend 48 hours.
Friday
4:00 PM | Arrive & Check In If you’re driving from the city, leave by 2:00 PM to beat weekend traffic. Train from Penn Station runs frequently and drops you downtown. Check into your hotel, drop your bags, head straight to the beach or grab early dinner depending on timing.
Where to stay: The Asbury for rooftop pool access and Salvation bar. Asbury Ocean Club if you want ocean views. The Berkeley for historic charm without boutique hotel prices.
6:00 PM | Early Dinner Beat the rush. Talula’s for wood-fired pizza and natural wine. TAKA for excellent sushi in a space that looks like it belongs in Chicago, not a beach town.
8:00 PM | Boardwalk Walk Digest dinner with a boardwalk walk while there’s still light. Grab coffee or ice cream. Check what’s playing at the Stone Pony, sometimes there are last-minute shows. Watch the sunset from the beach.
9:30 PM | Live Music or Drinks The Stone Pony for rock shows. Asbury Lanes if there’s an event on the calendar. Wonder Bar for something more low-key with live music and ocean views. Bond Street Bar if you just want well-made cocktails without a scene. Pascal & Sabine for French brasserie vibes and excellent wine.
Late Night Option: Johnny Mac House of Spirits stays open until 2 AM and serves free personal pizzas with every drink. It’s cash-friendly, local, and exactly what you want after a show.
Saturday
8:00 AM | Coffee & Breakfast Asbury Park Roastery on the boardwalk—grab coffee and sit outside watching the ocean wake up. Or Cardinal Provisions if you want the full breakfast experience. Weekend lines hit 45 minutes by 10 AM. Weekday mornings are easier, but you’re here on Saturday.
Alternative: Frank’s Deli for classic pork roll egg and cheese. Operating since 1965, Bourdain-approved, completely unchanged interior. Cash is helpful.
9:30 AM | Beach Setup Get your beach badge ($10 daily) and claim your spot before the crowds. North end near Convention Hall fills first. South toward Deal is quieter. Lifeguards on duty Memorial Day through Labor Day, 10 AM-5:30 PM.
What to bring: Sunscreen, water, a book, speaker if you’re that person. Beach vendors sell water and snacks but it’s overpriced.
12:30 PM | Lunch You have options. Stay on the beach and grab boardwalk food—Maruca’s for massive 24-inch tomato pies with the signature swirl sauce. Silverball Cafe for Nathan’s hot dogs and funnel cakes. Or leave the beach and hit Langosta Lounge for fresh seafood tacos and jalapeño pineapple margaritas.
Better option: Pack sandwiches from Cardinal or grab pizza from Talula’s to-go before the beach.
2:00 PM | Post-Beach Activity Rinse off the salt and choose your own adventure:
- Silverball Museum if you’re feeling nostalgic—$25 all-day access to 600+ pinball machines spanning 1930s to now.
- Hot Sand glass blowing if you booked ahead. Make a drinking glass or paperweight. Classes are 30-45 minutes, surprisingly fun.
- Wesley Lake pedal boats for the full kitsch Jersey Shore experience. Rent a swan or flamingo, pedal around for 30 minutes. Book sunset slots in advance.
- Downtown Cookman Avenue for shopping—Rebel Supply Company for vintage finds, Flux Modern for home goods, Cookman Creamery for exceptional ice cream.
5:00 PM | Showers & Regroup Back to the hotel. Shower off the beach, nap if needed, get ready for dinner. Asbury’s nightlife doesn’t peak until 9-10 PM, so don’t rush.
7:00 PM | Dinner. Make reservations. These spots book solid on summer weekends:
- Talula’s – Wood-fired pizza, house-made everything, excellent vegan options. The Beekeeper’s Lament is what most people order. Tuesdays are $10 pizza night if you’re here midweek.
- Pascal & Sabine – French brasserie with duck confit eggs benedict, steak frites with house mustard sauce, beignets that arrive in wax paper bags. Complimentary valet on Sundays, but you’re here Saturday.
- Reyla – Contemporary Mediterranean and Middle Eastern from the Barrio Costero team. Thoughtful mezze, grilled preparations, excellent wine list.
- Porta – Wood-fired pizza, fun atmosphere, a block from the boardwalk. The Asbury spot is the original. Expect a wait without reservations.
9:00 PM | Saturday Night Asbury Park’s nightlife is legitimately good. Here’s where locals go:
- The Stone Pony Summer Stage – Check the schedule before your trip. Outdoor shows with ocean breezes, full bar, tacos from the window inside. National acts and strong local bands.
- Salvation Rooftop Bar (The Asbury Hotel) – Upscale but not pretentious. Sunset views, well-made cocktails, crowd that’s dressed up but not trying too hard. Gets packed, arrive before 8 PM for a table.
- Watermark – Beachfront bar with expert mixologists and craft cocktails made with house-infused spirits. Ocean views, fireplace when it’s cool out.
- Laylow Cocktail Lounge – Intimate space, innovative drinks, bartenders who know what they’re doing. Ask them to make you something off-menu.
Sunday
9:00 AM | Brunch. at Pascal & Sabine – Duck confit eggs benedict, mushroom tart, those beignets. Sunday brunch includes live jazz. Complimentary valet.
- AP Rooftop – Unobstructed ocean views above Convention Hall. Biscuits and gravy are excellent. Reservations essential.
- Talula’s – Yes, again. The breakfast pizza situation is that good.
11:00 AM | Final Beach Session or Explore If it’s beautiful, hit the beach one more time. If you’re beached out, explore what you missed:
Paranormal Museum – Reservations required. Haunted dolls, a supposed Jersey Devil skull, ghost tours. It’s weird and very Asbury Park.
Wooden Walls Mural Project – Walk Cookman Avenue and the side streets. Massive murals from local and international artists. Not a formal tour, just wander.
Asbury Park Distillery – Tasting room with small-batch gin, vodka, whiskey. Cocktails are excellent. Industrial space, no pretense.
1:00 PM – Late Lunch Before Heading Out McLoone’s Pier House if you want one more ocean view and lobster rolls. The Robinson Ale House for coastal American food and a solid beer list. Or grab a final coffee from Asbury Park Roastery and hit the road.
Sunday traffic back to the city starts building after 2 PM. Leave by 1 PM if you can.

FAQ: Weekend in Asbury Park
Is Asbury Park crowded on weekends? Summer weekends, yes. Beach fills up by noon, restaurants book solid, parking gets tight. May and September weekends are much easier.
Can you do Asbury Park as a day trip? Absolutely, but a weekend lets you experience the nightlife and music scene, which is half the point of Asbury.
Is Asbury Park expensive? Mid-range for the Jersey Shore. Not Hamptons pricing, but not bargain beach town either. Expect to spend.
Do you need a car? Not if you’re staying in town. Train from NYC drops you downtown, everything’s walkable. Car is helpful for exploring other shore towns but not necessary for an Asbury weekend.
What’s the vibe? Creative, slightly edgy, welcoming. Less pretentious than you’d expect. Mix of locals, NYC weekenders, families, LGBTQ+ community, music fans, and people who just like good food and beach access.
Best weekend to visit? Late May or early September for weather without peak crowds. First weekend of September for Sea.Hear.Now festival if you’re into music and surf culture.
